Two months ago Sport needed glue for his eyebrow. Four months ago it was his forehead. Yesterday's trip to the hospital was for his finger. His first, and I’m sure not his last, football injury.
Last night all the boys in my life were playing football in the living room, (welcome to my world), when Jay made a grab for Sport and caught his finger instead. Sport cried in that special way reserved for a real hurt and there was an obvious deformity to his finger. We put a splint on it then packed up all the usual emergency room goods and went to get it checked.
Thankfully the quickcare was closed. I say thankfully because the actual hospital has a pediatric emergency room and they rock! The whole place is geared toward children and Sport had a grand time. The nurses tickled him, the Cat in the Hat was on TV, and there were stars on the ceiling. The staff made caring for Sport a priority and paperwork an afterthought. We were already in the room and had seen a nurse before I filled out the requisite forms and insurance information. Even then, they brought it all to me and made it feel like a friendly chat. Nicely done.
The doctor ordered an x-ray and was surprised to tell me the finger wasn’t broken, just a bad sprain. He’s not sure what the deformity is but we’ll check it again once the swelling goes down. So yet again Sport narrowly escapes the worst of an injury and comes away with just a bit of tape.
Jay, on the other hand, is wrecked. He feels awful that something he did, even though it was an accident, sent his boy to the hospital. I think it will take him longer to heal than Sport.
