Jay has been friends with John and Julie* for twenty something years, and like the rest of his long time friends, I adore them.
Christmas time doesn’t seem to go well for John and Julie. More than ten years ago John’s store was robbed. He did everything the bastards asked him and was lying face down on the ground when they shot him. Thankfully he survived but was paralyzed from the chest down. This last Christmas John spent 13 weeks in the hospital with an infection. It started as just a small scrape on his hip that turned into an open and expanding wound.
John is in excellent health now and they were determined to have a wonderful holiday and go on a much deserved vacation. They started their plans months ago and booked two tickets to Rome. Part of their trip included tickets to Christmas mass in St Peter’s Basilica. Um, wow. They also had tickets to a private audience with the Pope. The freakin POPE!
Instead of that trip of a lifetime, they are stuck home because of the snow. They watched the news coverage all that morning and repeatedly checked their flight. Each time they called the flight was on time. John and Julie were dropped of at the airport and their flight was still on time. It was announced the airport was closing but the agent said their flight wasn’t canceled and would be leaving. On. Time.
About an hour before boarding, their flight was finally cancelled. The next flight available to them was leaving the day before they were due to fly home. One day after their private audience with the POPE.
John and Julie did the only thing they could, called for a ride home and waited for their luggage. Five hours later still no luggage. They went home. Their luggage…on it’s way to Rome.

Now that really sucks! Another story of a bad thing happening to good people. It makes it hard to say "merry Christmas".
There must be a reason things didn't work out for them to be on that trip. I really do believe that everything happens for a reason.
